Everbound Review

Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.

Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.

Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.

In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

So, back in January I initially picked up Everbound with a view to reading for ten minutes before bed.  I really should have known what a huge mistake that was as I couldn’t stop reading and finally rolled into bed somewhere close to 3am, only stopping then because I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer and I didn’t want to miss a moment of the story.  THEN, the next day, I picked up where I left off and could not stop until I’d finished.  I didn’t get dressed until mid afternoon! Seriously, Brodi Ashton’s books put a spell on me every single time, and I’m convinced that she is some kind of witch (a good witch though, I hasten to add).  I was totally blown away by the first book, Everneath and I couldn’t wait to read the sequel which I have coveted for an entire year.  Seriously.  It goes without saying (or does it because frankly, I AM saying it) that if you have not read Everneath (review here) then please go and read it like now before reading this review otherwise you will encounter spoilers and I don’t want to ruin the story for you.  For everyone else, as you were.

You may remember that at the end of Everneath, Jack sacrificed himself and took Nikki’s place in the everneath AND THAT’S WHERE IT ENDED.  There were indeed shouts up and down the country as eager readers couldn’t believe that Brodi would leave us hanging like that! Okay, maybe she is an evil witch after all ;)  Anyway, now it’s Nikki’s turn to be Jack’s anchor and she keeps him alive through dreams. Every night, she dreams of him and reminds him of who he is and their love but she knows time is running out.  Jack is getting worse and their visits are getting shorter and shorter.  In the meantime, Nikki is in the middle of an investigation into Jack’s mysterious disappearance topside and everyone blames her but Will, Jack’s brother who knows what REALLY happened.  Nikki knows that she’s going to have to go back to the everneath to save Jack but she can’t do it alone and the only person she can ask for help....is Cole. Surprisingly, he agrees to help and we’re left wondering if he really is a good guy after all or does he have an ulterior motive?  Is he just afraid of losing Nikki, forever this time?

You need to understand that it’s REALLY DIFFICULT for me to talk about the plot in this book because holy baloney sandwiches, you are in for a treat.  There are some AMAZING twists and turns in this book and usually, I’m THAT person, y’know, the one that guesses the ending, tells you who the killer is, let’s you know what’s probably going to happen next but Brodi GOT ME GOOD.  I did not see any of her surprises coming and so yet again, I was totally blown away by the book. So much so, that I can safely say that Everbound in no way, shape or form fits the dreaded second book category.  It’s just as awesome as the first book, if not awesomer (yes, I’m totally taking artistic licence with that last word).  With Everbound, I was sucked right back into the story from page one. AGAIN.  How does she do it?  What is this magic that Brodi wields over me?! And let me tell you something else, in my review for Everneath I told you guys that Jack had the edge over Cole and I feel like Brodi took it as a personal challenge to prove me wrong.  You may not know this but I’m actually a complete sucker for the underdog and she made me fall in love with Cole which kinda surprised me and is totally a testament to her writing talent.

So by now, I don’t think I reaaaaally have to tell you how much I loved Everbound because you should be able to tell from this review ;)  This whole series rocks my world and just like last time, I can’t wait to read the next book which is probably a year away.  Waiting sucks but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Everbound was published on 22nd January, 2013 in the US and 14th February, 2013 in the UK.  To find out more about Brodi Ashton and her books, please click here to visit her website.
