Welcome to day 1 of The CrossRoads Blog Tour and today I'm featuring Amy Brecount White, author of Forget-Her-Nots (2nd March, 2010).

How did you come up with the idea for Forget-Her-Nots?

I went to hear the Nobel-winning author, Toni Morrison, speak. She said, “Write the novel that ONLY you can write.” It made me search deep for what was unique about me, what I uniquely had to share with the world. I’d also been researching the language of flowers for an article I wanted to write and had made a tussie-mussie (symbolic Victorian bouquet) for a friend who was very ill. Somehow it all came together, and I started thinking, “What if the flower messages really came true?”

Is it a standalone or a series? If a series, how many books can we expect from the series?

So far it’s a stand alone, but I’m hoping to write a companion novel. My next novel, String Theories, has nothing to do with flowers, though. It’s a contemporary YA about a girl who gets in over her head, a stream, the physics of relationships, and getting even.

Are you writing anything else at the moment or have any ideas in the pipeline? Will they be paranormal in nature?

I do love magic realism, so expect more of that in the future from me. Contemplating a super-sekrit project right now ….

About your writing style, are you a pantser or an outliner? What would your one bit of writing advice be?

It really depends on where I am in the novel. In the early stages, I let it flow, just to see where it will take me. As the story tightens up, I need to outline and do a calendar and the more organizational stuff to make sure I’m coherent. I would definitely advise all writers to make a calendar of their book. Just print out a blank one and fill out how your events unfold. My first editor made me do that, and it really showed where there were gaps or flaws.

What’s your favourite thing about Halloween?

The abundance of chocolate. Nom nom.

Favourite scary movie?

Eek! I can’t do scary movies ever since I saw one called “He Knows Your Alone” about a girl who was babysitting …. You can guess the rest. Funny thing, my kids can’t take them either. I’d rather watch a spoof of a scary movie, like a Mel Brooks movie.

If you could be any supernatural creature, what would you be and why?

A dragon, because I really want to fly, and I think they’re probably misunderstood.

  1. Great interview. Chocolate is my favourite thing about Halloween too. Forget-Her-Nots is already on my wishlist and it sounds like String Theories will also be interesting to read.

  3. This book is beautiful both in cover and content. I started reading it a while ago now but lost my book in lots of boxes! Now I have my shelves sorted out, I need to resume reading!

  4. I think dragons are the most misunderstood paranormal creature and they aren't written about a lot. People always think of them as destruction and fire breathing. I think they can be protective and kept tame until times of war. I haven't read the new book on dragons so I don't know her story, but maybe dragons will get a second chance to redeem themselves.
