Nightingale Review

Depressed and confused after her rescue from Summer Hill, Lark Greene trusts no one—not even herself. Cut off from Beck, all she wants to do is fade away and forget everything, but her mother has other plans: she wants to teach Lark how to master her Dark magic and pair her off with a new mate.

Lark is desperate to keep herself from going completely Dark, while also keeping Beck safe, so she allows herself to be drawn deeper into the dangerous, yet glamorous, world of the State. But as the Splinter Group launches attacks to wrest governmental control from the Dark witches, Lark finds herself drawing on her Dark magic more and more.

As her magic spirals out of control, no one around Lark is safe.

Certainly not Beck.

And not even Lark herself.

Ever since I finished the last page of Larkstorm, I have been desperately waiting for Nightingale to be released.  You may or may not remember that I fell in love with Larkstorm (review here) back in July of this year and have since re-read it three times, something that is UNHEARD of for me, let alone for a book blogger with a hefty TBR pile.  I may have read Nightingale more than once too LOL.  Nightingale is of course a continuation of the story as Larkstorm left our starcrossed lovers in a bit of a quandary. I am being kind of course, what I meant is that they’re basically screwed.

This is not going to come as a shocker to you but I LOVED the book.  Nightingale is a full on ANGSTFEST and I think it should come with a warning as I’m feeling a little battered and bruised emotionally speaking.  It was full of crazy and more than a little intense but still amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it.  It’s no secret that Dawn has been having a hard time recently in her personal life (she blogs about it) and I feel like she channelled that energy and all her emotions into the story and man, could I feel it.  There’s some pretty fabulous writing that is both raw and real and will rip your heart out.

“The world is on fire and I don’t know which way to run”

In Nightingale, Lark and Beck have been separated by the battle at Summer Hill and Lark is being manipulated by her crazy mother into telling the press and indeed the world, that Beck is evil and wants her dead.  She is forced to publically deny any feelings she has for him and it’s having a hefty toll on her mental state.  Basically, she’s a mess and not altogether likeable at times.  She is often out of control and lets the darkness consume her....and then she hurts people.  She always feels regret afterwards though which shows me that at least she retains some of her humanity.  I want to hug her one minute and slap her the next but mostly, I just want to hold on to her and let her cry.  I LOVE Beck for not giving up on her when she needs him the most and when it would almost be easier to let go.  I decided early on that I wasn’t going to give up on her either.  Besides, it’s not WHAT we are that matters but WHO we are, our behaviours are what makes us.  Lark has a choice and she needs to realise that instead of feeling powerless (for someone so powerful, she’s actually powerless in that respect).  She needs to take control and take responsibility for her magic and I hope we get to see that in the next book.

Nightingale allows some of the secondary characters to come to the forefront, one of which was Ryker.  I really liked Ryker you know...but...he’s not Beck and I lived for the moments when Beck popped up in the story.

I enjoyed seeing Kyra grow up although I’m scared for her and the world she has joined so easily.  It was interesting to see more of the dynamic between Callum and Annalise and her behaviour intrigues me.  I do believe she is hiding a lot of secrets and I don’t fully trust her.  I’m also highly suspicious of Dawson (Lark’s bodyguard) and I want to know who he is really and what is his agenda?  I guess time will tell.

Dawn is a fabulous writer who excels at realistic dialogue and natural, descriptive emotions and I would read anything she writes.  Nightingale will stay will you long after the daylight ends and whilst there are a lot of dark moments, the message I gleaned from it is one of hope.  I do love this story and after THAT ending? I need the next book STAT.

Nightingale was published on 24th September, 2012. To find out more about Dawn Rae Miller and her books, please click here to visit her website.

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, originally started by Jill at Breaking the Spine , that highlights upcoming book releases everyone is waiting on...hence the title. This week's pick is Crushed by Dawn Rae Miller.  Here's the synopsis:

For seventeen-year-old serial womanizer Fletch Colson, life is a game and if he plays by the rules, he’ll win it all: his dream college, his parents’ money, and a hot (if a little vapid) girl on his arm. Really, it couldn’t be easier. All he has to do is get good grades, live a privileged boarding school life, and try not to mess up too much.

However, when he accepts the seemingly impossible bet to change his ways and be “just friends” with smart, beautiful, tempting Ellie Jacobs – a girl who seems hell bent on confusing him - Fletch’s whole world is turned upside down.

Suddenly, what seemed simple and clear, no longer feels right and Fletch must decide if winning it all is worth losing a piece of himself.

I have to start by saying that I believe Dawn Rae Miller is one of the most ununderrated YA authors out there right now.  I LOVE her work and she always sucks me into a story immediately which is a rare talent.  This is a very different book than Larkstorm (which I also loved) as it's a lot more contemporary and dare I say, edgy?  I LOVE the cover and often the simple ones are the most effective.  Thankfully, we don't have a long wait for this as it's released on 11th December, 2012 and I may or may not be reading it now ;)

No Takebacks Review

There was something I didn’t know.

Something that would change everything.

The grand opening of Turtle Tear Resort is a time for celebration, but the man Rachael loves more than anything is suffering in silence. Rocha Enterprises was Merrick’s life. Now, he’s been left with no choice but to sell off the business he built from the ground up, and Rachael’s hell-bent on finding out why.

I love you too much not to fight to get it back.

Even if you’ve given up.

“You’re hurting me, Rachael…You’re going to him…I can’t promise I’ll be here when you get back.”

My heart bleeds as you stride away from me. Last night you told me you love me, now you’re walking away because I’m fighting for you.

Rachael can forgive and forget the past, but can Merrick overcome her betrayal?

After reading Taken (and subsequently being left hungry for more), I was ecstatic to find out that Kelli had immediately released a digital novella which carries on right where Taken left off.  It goes without saying that if you have not read Taken yet (review here) then please do not go any further as you WILL encounter spoilers and trust me when I tell you that you don’t want to do that.

No Takebacks is about what happened after - when the renovations at Turtle Tear have finished and there’s a huge party for friends, family and workers prior to the grand opening.  Merrick is having a hard time and Rachael is determined to find out what’s going on and a way to fix it if possible and bring happiness back to the man she loves.  In order to do this, she has to go to his father, a man whom Merrick has a strained relationship with at best, after all he is suing Merrick.  Rachael does indeed find out what’s going on and it’s probably the biggest revelation EVER but Merrick sees her little trip to see his father as the ultimate act of betrayal and can’t deal *rolls eyes* MEN.  I have a feeling that Taken by Storm (the next book in the series) is going to be PRETTY INTERESTING to say the least and I’m looking forward to a bit of angst and some hot make up sex lol.

Speaking of which, you might also be interested to know that No Takebacks has one of the raunchiest sex scenes I’ve come across and so you won’t want to miss that.  This was a great little novella and a must read for fans of the first book.  As always, I need the next book like NOW.

No Takebacks was published at the same time as Taken on 8th August, 2012.  Taken by Storm will be available by the end of the year (hopefully). To find out more about Kelli Maine and her books, please click here to visit her website.

Letterbox Love (#30)

As always, Letterbox Love is a weekly feature that I'm hosting on the blog and basically, the idea came out of a discussion with other UK book bloggers about the need to do a weekly meme with more of a British feel to it. Therefore, Letterbox Love was born and the logo was lovingly designed by Dark Readers. Letterbox Love is a way for us to share the books that come through our letterbox, galleys and e books (through our electronic letterbox) and any other bookish goodies that we want to tell you about. Letterbox Love is intended to showcase upcoming books and build up some excitement for them as well as let you know what is available out there. It is not about competing with other bloggers or boasting of any kind (c'mon, we're British and we don't do drama!)

Review Books

Broken Illusions by Ellie James
This is the second book in this series and I'm hoping I have the first one on the shelves otherwise I'm not going to be able to read this.  I'm thinking a shelves sort out might be in order ;)

Shadows by Paula Weston
This is a YA paranormal romance that has angels and demons in it and is set in Australia (the writer I believe is Australian).  I've seen some great reviews for this on Goodreads and I'm definitely intrigued to read it.

Skylark by Meagan Spooner
This is a dystopian book I've had my eye on for some time now and was disappointed that I was declined on Netgalley.  Now it's come over to the UK, I've got an ARC and I'm ready to dive in :)

Hidden by Marianne Curley
I'm sure I have a couple of books by this author on my shelves but I've not read them.  This is the start of a new series and features an angel girl who is stolen from her parents and hidden on earth. I'm definitely interested in reading this although the publication date is some way off yet.

Thank you publishers!!!

Books Bought

Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout
I'm a huge Jennifer L. Armentrout fan and would basically read anything she wrote.  I love this series and although I've already read and reviewed the book, I wanted my own copy.

Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
This was actually gifted to me by a fellow book blogger. I've heard some good things about this series and when I gave a book to someone recently, they offered me a swap and I chose this one.   I hate mass market paperbacks but I love the cover and I'm intrigued by the story.

EBooks

Accidentally on Purpose by L.D. Davies (Bought)
I do love the idea of sexual tension amidst being snowed in with nowhere to go.  This was a recommendation from a friend.

The Vincent Boys (New and Uncensored) by Abbi Glines (Bought)
I read The Vincent Boys a month or so ago and LOVED IT and recently a NEW version has been released in the UK so I had to get this and it was only 99p.  I'm slightly annoyed at having to read it AGAIN but then again, I've also overjoyed that I get to experience some Beau love all over again ;)

Writing Love (Screenwriting Tricks for Authors II) by Alexandra Sokoloff (Bought)
This is the second book in this series (I have the first one) and I wanted to get this to help with my writing.

I think I've been really restrained this week with my book buying this week and I'm glad as money is tight with Christmas coming up.  I am excited however to get my Secret Santa gifts together this weekend ;)  I hope you've all had a great week for books and as always, please leave your links.

Rock The Heart Blog Tour (Striker Bio & Excerpt)

I'm delighted to be part of the Rock The Heart blog tour today, especially as I loved the book!!  If you like New Adult novels with a little romance and a lot of rock stars, then this is definitely the book for you.  Here's the synopsis:

For the last four years, good girl Lane has regretted breaking up with Noel Falcon. She thought she was sensible when she told him his dreams of being a rock star would get him nowhere, but now that he's a rock god and her career is stagnant, she realizes just how wrong she was. When Noel hires the marketing company where Lane is an intern, she’s forced to see him again. If she wants to land her dream job as executive within the company, she has to win him over and secure his account. Too bad Noel is still pissed at her for breaking his heart.

When Lane’s company flies her to a Black Falcon concert to gain Noel’s attention, emotions run high the moment she sees him and realizes she’s far from over him. But Noel’s countless trysts with groupies and his cocky attitude make Lane believe he isn’t the same guy she once loved—now he seems to only want her body. Then after Lane discloses she needs him to procure a job, Noel proves he’s a changed man by forcing her to go on the road with him in order to get it.

After Lane reluctantly takes Noel up on his offer, she becomes willing to do whatever it takes to keep him satisfied, even if it means succumbing to his seductive ways. Lane soon finds deception is a dangerous game and she’s not the only one playing.

One of the characters is a British guy called Striker and I'm here to tell you all about him.  Here's his biography:

STRIKER

■Character Name: Striker

■Birth Date: May 12th
■Place of Birth: London, England
■Current Residence: Orange County, CA
■Height: 6’1”
■Weight: 190
■Hair Color: Black
■Hair Length: Shoulder length, straight, sometimes with multiple colors mixed in
■Eye Color: Brown
■Tattoos: Sleeves on both arms, back, hands, and chest
■Work History: Front man of Embrace the Darkness
■Quirks: Tucks hair behind his ear when nervous
■Key Adult Experiences: Achieving musical fame

Tobias Arthur Grant  (born May 12th), better known by his stage name Striker, is the lead singer, songwriter, and founding member for the British heavy metal band Embrace the Darkness. Striker is best known for his smooth vocal ability that can easily turn into a defining scream on command.

Striker began playing instruments at an early age, and went on to be classically trained in many forms of music. He studied at the University of West London: London College of Music. He fronted a band called Granting Admission while in at University that later disbanded due to creative differences.  Following this, Striker met up with Tolen Michaels, head talent scout for Mopar Records and formed Embrace the Darkness through the record label.

Embrace the Darkness debut album, Too Many Times, went gold, making the band a household name practically overnight. Their latest single Come to the Top is currently on Billboard’s Top 40.
Striker uses a stage name according to a recent interview because he hates his given name of Tobias. It reminds him of the father he’s never met, and hates the fact he’s named after him.

He currently sides in Orange County, California near Mopar Records home office.

Here's an excerpt from the book featuring Striker in all his glory:

I wander around back stage and find an empty bench. The roadies rush back and forth connecting cables and tuning instruments. The opening act for Black Falcon is set to take the stage in the next few minutes. I’m really enjoying all the great music I’ve heard the last couple shows and I’m curious as to what band is playing with them tonight. “Lanie, love, didn’t expect to see you again so soon.” I jerk my head towards the voice and set my eyes on a grinning Striker. His long, dark hair hangs in a low ponytail and a few shorter strands fall haphazardly around his face. The brown in his eyes is so dark they almost appear black from a short distance. Tight leather pants accompanied with a sleeveless dress shirt shows off his body and perfectly placed tattoos. I’m definitely intrigued by him. I smile at him. “Hey, Striker. I didn’t know Embrace the Darkness was opening for Black Falcon.”Striker must take my smile as an invitation because he plops down next to me on the bench and causally stretches his arm behind me. “We do from time to time. Same record label and all. Say, you think you might fancy getting a drink with me later?”When I gave my number to him the other day, I didn’t even think about the possibility of something happening between Noel and I. But, since we kissed last night, I feel like that changes things a bit.
“Striker, I’m not sure…” “Ah, come on. Just one drink.” He winks at me, and when I hesitate with my answer, he says, “Don’t tell me you’ve got a thing going on with that Noel, bloke. He’s not worthy of a lovely such as you.”
I raise an eyebrow, taken back at his forwardness. “And you are?” Striker takes my hand into his and then raises it to his lips. “I would treat you like the queen you are.”

Taken Review (and giveaway)

ABDUCTION.
You steal me away to a deserted island, to the one place I’ve dreamed of being—the one place I can’t go.

SEDUCTION.
You’re used to buying whatever you want, but you can’t buy me...how do I resist the magnetism of your body, the longing ache deep inside me? I want you to take me—on my terms.

DESPERATION.
Every attempt you make to love me only hurts me. How can we go on like this?

This is the story of how I was TAKEN.

Rachael DeSalvo cares for those she loves with no regard for what she needs from them in return. When her father dies, her mother’s emotional dependency becomes overbearing. Unable to leave her distressed mother, Rachael turns down her dream job with Rocha Enterprises.

Billionaire real estate mogul, Merrick Rocha, knows what motivates people and what buttons to push to get what he wants. When the perfect project manager candidate turns down his job offer, it drives him mad. Three months of watching Rachael from afar has him more determined than ever to have her—for much, much more than an employee.

Merrick takes what he wants, but can he convince Rachael to give him what he needs?

All I want to say is WOW.  Taken by Kelli Maine is one of those rare books where I loved the plot, the characters, the setting, hell EVERYTHING about the book and let me tell you something that might surprise you - THIS IS A SELF PUBLISHED BOOK and one of the highest quality I’ve seen.  So much so that it might not surprise you to know that it’s now been picked up by a publisher and a paperback version is in the works (I’m soooo getting it for the shelves).   I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this book but I’m going to try because y’know...I’m supposed to write a review and all ;)

Taken is an adult novel and as such, it contains mature content and sexually explicit scenes so if that’s not your thing, then don’t read this.  However, if you like a bit of spice with your romance novel, then this is DEFINITELY the book for you.

One of the first things that will grab you is the writing style.  Taken is written in the second person from Rachael’s point of view and every word is aimed at Merrick as she says things like “you’re dangerous”.  At first, I was taken aback by this as I’ve not seen this technique used before but I actually quite like it.

The opening scene of Taken hooked me right in and made me think the story might go down a ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ kind of path and in a way it did BUT Merrick never meant any harm, he just got desperate.  He risked everything (which was incredibly stupid and he spends a lot of time throughout the novel feeling guilty about it and rightly so) and you’ll just have to read it to see if his gamble truly paid off.  There’s a reason why a hostage scene is a popular fantasy for women but it has more to do with dominance and submission, about control than actually hurting someone.  Merrick never set out to hurt Rachael and we learn early on that there is no way on earth that he would ever do that.  What he did, he did out of desperation and whilst I don’t condone his actions, I certainly understand where he’s coming from after reading the book.  Rachael quite rightly is very shaken up and upset in the beginning and I liked the way that she stayed true to her character throughout the book.  Just because a hot guy who she’s attracted to is in front of her, It doesn’t excuse what he did and they both know that.  What I will say though is that there is a really hot sex scene at the beginning of the book where they don’t even touch each other and I’d not read a scene like that before but it’s enough to melt your panties right off.

Which leads me quite nicely on to Merrick who is Merricklicious in all the right ways and I loved how he gave all the power and control over to Rachael.  He had to do this otherwise it would seem like he took her and forced her to do things.  He left the choices up to her; if she wanted him then she would have to take him on her own terms only it’s not going to be so easy as trust has to be earned, something neither of them can forget.  Despite his initial major fuck up and subsequent fuck ups, I’d still like to know where I can get me a Merrick of my own ;)

Taken played out like a movie in my head and the Turtle Tear Resort is definitely a place I’d like to visit but only if I had Merrick to myself and the rest of the place was deserted of course ;)  Rachael made you feel like you were right there with her, touching, tasting, and feeling everything like she did.  The novel is not just about Rachael and Merrick though as there are secondary characters and I just want to say that Joan (Merrick’s assistant) was a bit of a scary bitch but then she has her reasons for being like that and in some ways, I can understand that.

As I mentioned earlier, this book has a great plot which branches off into a few subplots, one of which I think is going to play a major part in the next book and I can’t wait to see how it all pans out.   I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so much so that I’ve already re-read it once and just writing my review makes me want to read it again.  I can’t recommend Taken highly enough and want to buy all my girlfriends a copy!

Taken was released as a digital novel on 8th August, 2012.  The paperback edition will be available in January, 2013.  A Taken novella entitled No Take Backs is also available now and the next book entitled Taken by Storm will be available by the end of the year (hopefully).

TO WIN ebooks of both Taken and No Takebacks, please leave me a comment with your name, country and email address (note that you have to be over 16 to enter this contest because of the adult content).  This contest is international and the deadline is 1st December, 2012.  The winner will be chosen at random and they have 48 hours to respond before a new winner is chosen.

Opal Cover Reveal

I know there's been at least one cover floating around the internets for a while for Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout but I'm delighted today to reveal the ACTUAL cover to you and it's definitely one of my favourites (for obvious reasons).

Opal is of course the third book in the LUX series and you are SERIOUSLY missing out if you haven't started reading this series yet.  I've been championing these books from the beginning as they are smoking hot and full of smexy, snarky and funny.  If you need to catch up, then my review of Obsidian is here, Shadows is here and Onyx is here.

Here's the synopsis for Opal:

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

Opal is available in both print and digital version on 18th December, 2012. To find out more about Jennifer L. Armentrout and her books, please click here to visit her website.
She is also active on Facebook  and Twitter.

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, originally started by Jill at Breaking the Spine , that highlights upcoming book releases everyone is waiting on...hence the title. This week's pick is Transparent by Natalie Whipple. Here's the synopsis:

X-Men meets The Godfather; in which an invisible girl has to stop her dad—an infamous crime lord—from ruining her life.

On the run from her mind-controlling father, the infamously invisible Fiona McClean hides in a small town, hoping to finally rid herself of the crime world she has always known. But playing at “normal life” with a mother she hates, a brother she can’t trust, and a boy she can’t stand proves more difficult than she ever imagined. Soon her father is hot on her heels, and it’s up to Fiona to protect not only her family, but the friends who’ve taught her that life doesn’t have to be as lonely and cruel as she thought.

I have been following Natalie Whipple's publication journey for the longest time and I am THRILLED that her book is FINALLY coming out.  It's probably wrong of me to compare this to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because I have neither read the book or seen the movie but that's the kind of thing that springs to mind when I read the synopsis for Transparent.  I definitely think it sounds interesting and I LOVE the cover.  Fingers crossed that it lives up to my expectations ;)

Transparent is published on 21st May, 2013 with no information about a possible UK release.

The Dark Heroine: Dinner with a Vampire Review

One moment can change your life forever…

For Violet Lee, a chance encounter on a darkened street draws her into a world beyond her wildest imaginings, a timeless place of vast elegance and immeasurable wealth – of beautiful mansions and lavish parties – where a decadent group of friends live for pleasure alone. A place from which there is no escape… no matter how hard Violet tries.

Yet all the riches in the world can’t mask the darkness that lies beneath the gilded surface, embodied in the charismatic but dangerous Kaspar Varn.

Violet and Kaspar surrender to a passion that transcends their separate worlds – but it’s a passion that comes at a price…

I had heard nothing about The Dark Heroine by Abigail Gibbs until it was recommended to me by a friend and fellow book blogger who thought I would enjoy it.  THEN, all the hype came out through the national press.  Why the hype? Because Abigail started writing this when she was fifteen (having been inspired by the likes of Twilight but felt there should be more blood and gore), and started posting snippets of it on Wattpad where she gleamed millions of followers.  Unfortunately, the readers never got to find out what happened in the end but now that the book has been picked up by a major publisher, they finally can.

At 522 pages, the Advance Reader Copy (ARC) is a big book but I devoured it in a day as I could not stop reading.  I really enjoyed the story, particularly when we came to learn why the book is titled as it is but unfortunately, there were a lot of negatives that I struggled with along the way.

Firstly, I did not feel the writing was tight enough or polished enough which is a shame considering but there’s definitely potential there.

Secondly, I realise this is an ARC but as such, whilst it may contain some errors, it should be as ready as it can be for the reader.  What I found was a manuscript that looked like it had not been edited AT ALL.  Besides all the usual spelling and grammar mistakes, I was shocked to find glaringly obvious plot holes and I became very frustrated with all the inconsistencies and constantly flipping back and forth to check out facts.   Don’t get me wrong, I do actually ENJOY doing that when I know I’m doing it as a job but as a reader, NO.  JUST NO.  I ended up e mailing the publishers with the list of errors and was assured that the majority of them had been dealt with for the ACTUAL publication so obviously I cannot vouch for whether this is the case as I do not have the time or inclination to trawl through the kindle version which was released just days later.

Whilst there was a semi explicit sex scene in the book, I definitely do not agree with the bold statement that this is “the sexiest romance you’ll read this year”, not by a long shot (have you SEEN the books I read? lol).  In fact, I was concerned that Violet was generally abused throughout the entire book and some of that was from the love interest!  I guess you have to remember that he is a vampire after all and he has a dark nature by his very definition.

This has to be one of the most difficult reviews I’ve ever written because despite the near constant frustration and the not-so-perfect-writing, I STILL enjoyed the story and this is the first time I’ve read a 522 page book in a day.  Abigail Gibbs may be young but she certainly has potential and I would be very interested in reading the next book and watching her grow as a writer.

The Dark Heroine was published on 11th October, 2012 in the UK and will be published on 5th March, 2013 in the US.  Abigail Gibbs doesn’t appear to have her own website at the moment but she is active on social network sites.

Letterbox Love (#29)

The Declaration by Gemma Malley
The Resistance by Gemma Malley
The Legacy by Gemma Malley
Gemma Malley's books have recently had a cover makeover and look better than ever in my opinion (although I can't help being reminded of The Hunger Games and Divergent as the books have a circular symbol on each of them).  Obviously, this is a dystopian series that has been around for a while but I'm keen to find out what it's all about.

The Disappeared by C.J. Harper
This is a British dystopian novel and that fact alone makes me want to read it.  It comes out in January, 2013.

Thank you publishers!!

Books Bought

Reached by Ally Condie
This is the third and final book in the Matched series, a series I have loved since the beginning.  Reading this will be bittersweet but I can't wait to find out what happens and how it all ends.

Black City by Elizabeth Richards
I've been waiting to read this for the longest time and the fact that the movie rights were sold a month before the book was published only intrigues me more.  Surely it won't be much longer before this has a UK publisher.

Renegade by J.A. Souders
Renegade is a debut novel and the first in a new series set in an underwater world.  I think this sounds fresh and interesting.  I have high hopes for this one.

EBooks

Touched by Corrine Jackson (Bought)
I LOVE the sound of this book as it's about a girl who can heal and I've been wanting a story like that for the longest time.

Taking Chances by Molly McAdams (Bought)
This is a New Adult novel and I like the idea that she falls in love with two boys at college - the kind of boys that she was warned to stay away from.

Lengths by Liz Reinhardt and Steph Campbell (Bought)
This is a contemporary New Adult novel and I wanted to sample some of Liz Reinhardt's writing.

You Had Me At Hello by Mhairi McFarlane (Bought)
It's a debut novel that's set in the UK, it's funny and it was only 99p.  What more do you need to know?!

Charade by Nyrae Dawn (Bought)
Another New Adult novel and it sounds good - I like the idea of play acting, pretending to be something else and then it feels so real, that you're not acting anymore.

The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay (Bought)
This character driven romance and New Adult novel has nothing but five stars on Amazon and it looks like I bought it just in time as the kindle version has been pulled.  On further investigation, I see that it's been picked up by a publisher and will be released next June by Atria books. That fact alone has me intrigued but I wanted to read it before I knew that.

Derailed by Alyssa Rose Ivy (Bought)
A New Adult novel about a girl who goes back home after the death of her fiancee and basically finds a way back to the girl she used to be.

Just Remember to Breathe by Charles Sheehan-Miles (Bought)
This New Adult novel is an ANGST FEST and I love me some angst.  I also find it intriguing when romances are written by men.  This book has my name all over it.

In the Band by Jean Haus (Bought)
Another New Adult novel about a girl who tries out for a local rock band and has some major chemistry with one of her band mates.  Too bad he's a jerk but that makes for some interesting reading, I'm sure ;)

On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves (Bought)
This is billed as a love story with a twist and film rights have been optioned.  A thirty year old teacher and a younger man get stranded on a desert island together.  I like the sound of this - I loved movies like Castaway and The Blue Lagoon.

Fall From Grace by Christine Zolendz (Bought)
I believe this is a New Adult paranormal romance and that's why I wanted to read it as so many of the New Adult novels I'm picking up are contemporary.

Tell Me You Want Me by Amelia James (Bought)
A New Adult novel that is a steamy romance and that's practically all I know about the plot LOL.

That Boy by Jillian Dodd (Bought)
This sounds a little bit like The Vincent Boys to me (which I loved) and so of course, I had to read it.

Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard (Bought)
This is a New Adult novel about forbidden love and I thought that would be good.  I love forbidden romance.

Disastrous by EL Montes (Bought)
I can't work out if this sounds a bit like Fifty Shades or not but I want to find out.

Flight by Alyssa Rose Ivy (Bought)
Another New Adult paranormal book that I bought for the same reasons listed earlier.

Awakening by Elene Sallinger (Bought)
This is an adult novel that was recommended to me and what impressed me into buying it is that it won the new writing competition at the Festival of Romance 2011.

Rock Me by Cherie Lynn (Bought)
Who doesn't love a bad boy? Nuff said.

Accidentally Married to...a Vampire? by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff (Bought)
The title grabbed me first.  This is an adult novel and I think it sounds really good - lots of snark, a dominant vampire, a human woman belonging to a vampire according to their law.

Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye (Bought)
I love the idea of two strangers being trapped in a dark lift together.  Apparently, it's quite a short book but an interesting one all the same!

Life of Pi by Yann Martel (Bought)
So of course I'd heard of the book before now but I never had any inclination to read it.  Truth be told, I didn't even know what it was about but then I saw the AMAZING movie trailer and I knew I had to read it.

Rock The Heart by Michelle A. Valentine (Bought and for review)
I actually received an ARC of this but had some problems getting it onto my laptop so I bought a copy as it was released early.  I just love the idea that a rockstar writes a song about the girl who broke his heart and calls it "Ball Busting Bitch".  SOLD.

Love Evolution by Michelle Mankin (Bought)
Based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, this is a New Adult novel that is centred around a rock band.  Any New Adult novel that is inspired by Shakespeare has me officially intrigued.

Love Revolution by Michelle Mankin (Bought)
Inspired by Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, this is the second book in the series and is set around a record label.

Oh dear God, after promising myself that I would not buy anymore ebooks this month, I have bought 24 of them this week alone.  In my defence, what happened was I started looking at a list on Goodreads that had New Adult recommendations on it and then someone took over my body and started buying them using *MY* Amazon account.  Therefore, I do solemnly swear that I will not buy any ebooks in the next week so that my bank balance can have a short rest and these posts don't take as long LOL!  I hope you all had a great week for books and please leave your links below.

The Mortal Instruments (City of Bones) Trailer

Oh my God, look at this gorgeous movie poster for Cassandra Clare's City of Bones.  Not only did we get this beautiful piece of art this week but we also got the official teaser trailer which uses one of my favourite pieces of music - Sunshine by John Murphy (Adagio in D Minor).  The good news is there are more trailers to come and I CANNOT WAIT until August, 2013 when it is released.  I really wish it was out now!!!!

Breaking Dawn Part Two Review

I have loved the Twilight Saga since the first movie and that’s what got me interested in reading the books (which I devoured over the course of three days).  Gone were silly little things like cooking, cleaning, eating, and sleeping, I had to have my Twilight fix and I did feel sorry for my boyfriend during that time. Okay, I mean I felt sorry AFTER that time as I couldn’t think of anything else during!    I’m a huge Twilight fan but I don’t consider myself to be a Twihard in the true sense of the word – there’s no way in hell I would camp out for four days to catch a glimpse of the stars and I would never scream like a little girl if I saw them.  No offence to others, that’s just not me.

Despite all this, I’m not ashamed to say that I attended the midnight showing for Breaking Dawn Part Two as it’s the last movie in the franchise and quite frankly, it’s got to be done.  I have been DYING to see this since I got up out of my cinema seat after watching part one. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve definitely become a lot more cynical about things and I thought the people behind the movies were milking the franchise for everything they could get.  Whilst that may still be true, I now FULLY UNDERSTAND why they split the last book into two movies and I’m so glad they did.  It’s been a long time coming but do you know what?

IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT.

I probably shouldn’t have seen it considering I worked a 14 hour shift the day before and so far today, I’ve been up for 22 hours but I wanted to see the movie damn it and no one was going to stand in the way of that.  I came home (at about 2am) and immediately started writing my thoughts down which went something like this...

OMFG THAT WAS THE BEST MOVIE OUT OF THE WHOLE LOT.

From the very moment it began, the titles were beautifully artistic and symbolic so I knew then that not only was it going to be okay but we were in for a treat.  At 115 minutes long, it was so action packed that I seriously thought we’d been short changed for a minute and I totally looked at my watch to confirm this as it seemed to go by so quickly.

Breaking Dawn Part Two of course introduced us to lots of new characters (“There’s a lot of red eyes around here”) as well as reintroducing some we’d seen before, albeit briefly.  There was no sign of Bella’s mother but then she wasn’t mentioned in the last part of the book either.   Speaking of Bella, baby girl is all grown up and looks better than ever.  Gone are the shy glances, the awkwardness, the lip biting.  She is a strong confident woman, a mother and a new born vampire who can kick some serious arse!  I have to say at this point that one of the best and funniest scenes for me was when Bella found out that Jacob had imprinted on Renesmee.  BRILLIANT.  And Renesmee was adorable.

I also want to mention the cottage and just say WOW, that is my dream home.  I loved the way that the place was LITTERED with books (obvs).

I thought the movie was very close to the book and they did an excellent job.  I know that there is a lot of talk about the ending and I’m ecstatic that people are desperate to keep it a secret and not spoil it for anyone else.  I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE.  It was awesome though and what I will say is that it was perfectly executed and very well done.

Breaking Dawn Part Two will give you ALL THE FEELS and leave you longing for more.   I do wish there was some continuation of the story and this is one series that has really tempted me into writing fan fiction as I’d love to explore the relationship between Jacob and Renesmee.

A great ending to the series.

The Siren Review

Notorious Nora Sutherlin is famous for her delicious works of erotica, each one more popular with readers than the last. But her latest manuscript is different—more serious, more personal—and she's sure it'll be her breakout book...if it ever sees the light of day.

Zachary Easton holds Nora's fate in his well-manicured hands. The demanding British editor agrees to handle the book on one condition: he wants complete control. Nora must rewrite the entire novel to his exacting standards—in six weeks—or it's no deal.

Nora's grueling writing sessions with Zach are draining…and shockingly arousing. And a dangerous former lover has her wondering which is more torturous—staying away from him...or returning to his bed?

Nora thought she knew everything about being pushed to your limits. But in a world where passion is pain, nothing is ever that simple.

Forgive me if this sounds like the start of a bad joke but what do you get when you cross a teenage virgin, a priest, and a stuffy British guy with a dominatrix? Why, The Siren by Tiffany Reisz of course!  I think it goes without saying that this is a VERY adult book and so please proceed with caution.  If that’s not your thing, then I would suggest you avert your eyes now.

I don’t know why I’m surprised but the thing that stands out most for me about The Siren is how exceptionally well written it is.  Nora is smart and quick witted, and I often laughed out loud at her flirtatious comments. She’s admirable in the sense that she is confident about her sexuality and isn’t afraid of going out there and getting what she wants.  Her life is somewhat complicated however by three men in particular – Wesley (her teenage friend and part time lodger), Zach (her new editor who hasn’t quite signed on until Nora proves herself as a writer) and Soren, a man who she has a sordid history with.  There were a lot of different relationship dynamics explored in this book and I have to say that I really enjoyed that, especially Nora’s relationship with Wesley.

I had no real problems with Zach or Wesley but I did not like Soren at first.  Nora’s relationship with him seemed creepy and disturbed but the more I read, the more I changed my opinion and warmed to him, even if only a little.  I really like when an author can make you change your mind about a character and I look forward to more of that with the next book.  I want to see if Soren can truly win me over.

I will say that some of the more explicit content made for uncomfortable reading at times and I don’t agree with the beatings – I’m sorry but to me, it’s not love when someone is crying in pain and the one inflicting pain is getting pleasure out of it but perhaps I don’t understand the world that these people are part of and I accept that. It doesn’t mean that I’m not intrigued by their story however as I want to understand what drives them, like they’re a puzzle I need to figure out.

I can see now why someone said that the Fifty Shades series was tame in comparison but what I did like about that series was there was a love story at the heart of it and whilst it might have a bit of kinkyfuckery, it didn’t cross any major lines, it was just sexy.  The Siren arguably crosses lines and perhaps even draws some new ones but make no mistake, it WILL draw you in and not let you go.  This is definitely a DIFFERENT kind of love story and one that I’m still figuring out.

Despite some reservations, I did enjoy the book and I definitely want to read the rest of the series.  I’m uber impressed with the writing and it makes me want to check out all of Tiffany’s other books immediately.

The Siren was published on 31st July, 2012 in the US and 1st June, 2012 in the UK.  Currently on Amazon UK, you can buy a digital version of The Siren for just 20p and there is a prequel entitled Little Red Riding Crop that is free at present.  To find out more about Tiffany Reisz, please click here to visit her website.

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, originally started by Jill at Breaking the Spine , that highlights upcoming book releases everyone is waiting on...hence the title. This week's pick is Dualed by Elsie Chapman. Here's the synopsis:

You or your Alt? Only one will survive.

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.

Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.

Elsie Chapman's suspenseful YA debut weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.

I think this has the potential to be an awesome dystopian novel and one which definitely sounds worthy of being up on the silver screen.  Unfortunately, I was just turned down for it on Netgalley (booooo!) so I'll just have to wait to read it when it comes out on 26th February, 2013.  There is no news of a UK release as of yet.

No Publisher, No Problem (The Rise of the Independent Author)

Are you only interested in a book if it comes from a major publisher and a trusted name you recognise?  Does it make a difference to you if a book is self published?  Most importantly, would you still read it?

A lot of bloggers have included the words “I will not review self published books” in their review policy and I have to admit that as a book blogger, I too have been guilty of that kind of prejudice for the following reasons; Firstly, self published books have little to no editing and I don’t know about you but it drives me CRAZY when a book is littered with spelling and grammar mistakes.  Secondly, you’re not guaranteed to get a decent story as it hasn’t been looked at by respected and experienced agents and editors.  Last but not least, there has been some bad blood between self published authors and book bloggers, mainly when authors respond negatively to less than flattering reviews and an argument/slanging match ensues.  Yeah, not good.  So basically, self published authors are fighting an uphill battle from the start to get their books read.

BUT

Consider this...

With the cost of books nowadays, I sometimes look at the cheaper end of the ebook market on Amazon and as you might imagine, a lot of those are self published.  Every now and then, a book sounds really appealing and I decide “what the hell, it’s only 77p” and give it a go.  More and more, I find A LITTLE GEM hiding among the rocks and think “holy shit, how is a story this good so cheap?!”  I can also tell you that the quality of self published books is definitely improving and that’s good news for the reader.

Reading self published books has forced me do a complete 180 on my views about them and I have authors like Tammara Webber (Easy), Abbi Glines (The Vincent Boys), Jamie McGuire (Beautiful Disaster) and Amanda Hocking (Switched) to thank for that.  These books all started out as self published novels and are so good that they have ALL been picked up by major publishers now.  I also want to point out that I have never had a problem with an author responding negatively to a review and at the end of the day, it’s all about mutual respect and constructive criticism rather than a personal attack on the author.

We’re taught not to judge a book by its cover but I’m asking you not to judge a book by its publication route. As a book blogger and reader, if you are vehemently against reading self published books, you could be missing out on not only a great story but also the next big thing.

Something Like Normal Review

When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

It’s so refreshing to pick up a book that only has about 200 pages, especially after the monster books I’ve been reading recently and so THANK YOU Trish Doller for providing me with a shorter, snappy story that I read in one sitting.  I’d had my eye on Something Like Normal for ages as it was different to most YA books - the story centres on Travis, a marine who is on extended leave, trying to deal with the aftermath of his friend being killed and subsequently work his way through Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  His brother is hooking up with his “girlfriend” and his parents’ marriage is falling apart. Travis reconnects with a childhood friend (a girl whose reputation he accidentally destroyed when they were fourteen) and their developing relationship is both sweet and heart-warming as we realise that not all guys (also guys that happen to be marines) just want to get laid.

I LOVED the fact that Travis was the main protagonist and his voice was authentic and written well considering the author is female.  She obviously put a lot of time and effort into her research about marines and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it shows.  It’s also good to read about this kind of story as there are a lot of young guys and girls out there on the front line and really, we have no idea what they must go through out there and how it affects them if and when they return home.  I liked the fact that the family were supportive and sending of care packages was very touching.  I’m sure if I knew someone in the forces, I’d be doing the same.

I enjoyed the relationship Travis had with his mom and Harper was sweet.  I couldn’t help thinking of The Last Song by Nicholas Sparkes when I got to the turtles scene though. Whilst I enjoyed the book, sometimes I’m not sure how I feel about character driven contemporary novels, I mean really.....NOTHING HAPPENED and really nothing was resolved BUT... I liked that part as the ending wasn’t all wrapped up neatly in a perfect package however there was an overall message of hope.

Whilst I enjoyed the book, it wasn’t an “OMG WOW” book for me but I’d still recommend it as a different kind of story and really, who can resist a man in uniform? ;)

Something Like Normal was published on 19th June, 2012. To find out more about Trish Doller and her books, please click here to visit her website.

Letterbox Love (#28)

I am becoming increasingly shocked and horrified by just how many ebooks I seem to pick up during the week and I didn't even look at any recommendation lists until today!  Damn that one click button on Amazon, it's just TOO EASY to use it.  I'm justifying it to myself though by thinking that the books are much more affordable in this format. Anyway, on with the show...

Review Books

Trapped by Kevin Hearne (Unsolicited)
Apparently, this is the second book in this fantasy series that I've never heard of and as such, guess what? I haven't read the first book so I can't read this.  It does sound interesting though, especially when the marketing material states that "The Iron Druid Chronicles were the fastest selling debut urban fantasy books in the US last year".  Whether I look up the first book or not is debatable.

Cold Days by Jim Butcher (Unsolicited)
I have no idea what number book this is in this series I've never heard of but I've seen at least eight books in front of it so do you think it's likely that I'll be reading this?  Don't get me wrong, it's not about being ungrateful, I just have no idea why publishers do this as surely it would be better for the book to be sent to a reviewer who knows, read and loved the series...*sigh*  IF THIS IS YOU, let me know and you can have this.

The Boneshaker by Cherie Priest (Unsolicited)
This is billed as a steampunk, zombie-airship adventure and has basically combined all the elements I don't like so I don't think I will be reading this anytime soon.  The only thing that intrigues me is that the film rights have been sold.   If you are desperate to read this book and are not just "yeah, it's free so I'll have it", please let me know and I'll send it to you.

Out for Blood by Kristen Painter (Unsolicited)
This is book four in a series I've never heard of and never read.  Do you see where I'm going with this? Again though, the series sounds interesting as it's about a race of humans bred to feed vampire nobility and I'd actually be interested in reading these.

Lovely, Dark and Deep by Amy McNamara
How beautiful is this book cover? Also, because the protagonist is off to college, this is a New Adult book and I'm not sure why it's not being marketed that way.   I'm definitely interested in reading this.

Thank you publishers!!

Books Bought

Venom by Fiona Paul
I've been hearing a lot about this book lately and WOW, look at that cover.  This book is set in Renaissance Venice and as such, is a YA historical fiction book with plenty of mystery and forbidden romance.  I just know I'm going to love this book.

Beautiful Redemption by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
I cannot believe how far this series has come and I'm ashamed to say that this is how behind I am with it - I have only read the first book AND THIS IS THE FOURTH.  I'm collecting the US hardbacks though and I definitely want to continue the story which is why I bought this.  I actually plan to re-read Beautiful Creatures before the movie comes out (which I'm DYING to see).
Write to be Published by Nicola Morgan
I respect Nicola Morgan's writing advice and so of course I had to buy her book.  Again, another useful writing resource.

The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines
I only recently read my first Abbi Glines book and this was it!  I LOVED it and decided to buy the hardback for my collection.

Write great Dialogue by Irving Weinman
Dialogue can make or break a book for me and so I know how important it is.  I thought this would be a great writing resource.

EBooks

A Shimmer of Angels by Lisa M. Basso (For Review)
This is available for immediately download on Netgalley right now and is one of the launch titles from Month 9 Books.   It's about angels so of course I have to read it.

Come Away With Me by Kristen Proby
This is an adult contemporary romance novel and I had the fortune of reading the first chapter recently and decided I had to read it.  I'm currently reading it now.

Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning
This is an adult novel about a Sex professor and a rock band which sounds funny but makes for some interesting chemistry and I LOVED IT.  So much so, that I immediately downloaded the rest of the series or at least the books that were available as I believe the author is planning a book for each member of the band.  I think I've found a new series I love. Yippee!

Rock Hard by Olivia Cunning
This is the second installment in the Sinners series and this is Sed's story which SHOULD BE INTERESTING.  I can only say that because I've just finished reading Backstage Pass but still.  Looking forward to this.

Double Time by Olivia Cunning
This is the third book in the series and has only recently been released. This is Trey's story and he is a strange one so again, this should be interesting.  What I love about this series is that the characters all have individual personalities and seem so real which is what makes reading about them so enjoyable.

Captivated by You by Diane Alberts
This is the first in a new series by this best selling author.  It's an adult contemporary romance and sounds a little bit Christmasy with the mention of snow storms.

Reflection by Jessica Roberts
I saw this on a recommendation list somewhere for New Adult novels and it does sound pretty interesting - especially when you find out that she's been in a coma (that is not a spoiler, it is after all in the synopsis).

Want by Stephanie Lawton
I love the cover for this and again, it was a recommendation on a list for a New Adult novels.  I like the fact that the protagonist is a musician and I thrive on inappropriate or forbidden relationships so I think I'm going to like this one.

The Marriage Trap by Jennifer Probst
The second book in this adult contemporary series featuring another one of the characters and I'm sure it will be a fun read.

The Marriage Mistake by Jennifer Probst
This is the final installment in this adult contemporary series and I've enjoyed it so far so I'm sure I'll like this.

A Very Sexy Christmas by Karen Erickson
This is a very short story that I read in about 10 minutes.  It was OK but not really worth the money and in my opinion, should have been free.

Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens
I've seen some pretty impressive five star reviews for this on Amazon and I'm not sure whether it's adult or New Adult but I want to read it!

The Father Christmas Confessions by Emily Ann Benedict
I love the sound of this - that Father Christmas isn't just one man but a secret organisation.  Throw a little romance and a bit of a mission in there and you've got a heartwarming Christmas story, perfect for the holiday season.

Christmas Chaos by Jennifer Conner
This is REALLY short at 25 pages but I like the idea of trying to get somewhere on Christmas Eve, only to get stuck in an elevator with a tall, dark stranger.  Besides, it's Christmasy so I thought I'd give it a go. I really think at 25 pages though, it should have been free.

Mr Real by Carolyn Crane
This is an adult novel with an original plot.  Occult software that can bring any image to life?  Getting drunk and conjuring up a guy off TV who fancy? lol I love the idea of this.

Seeing Shadows by S.H. Kolee
I just finished reading Love Left Behind by the same author and loved it so much that I downloaded her other books.  Seeing Shadows is also New Adult but more paranormal so I'm looking forward to reading something slightly different from this author I've just discovered.

Chasing Shadows by S.H. Kolee
This is the second book in this paranormal series and I bought it already because I get scared that it won't be there when I go back for it (this happened recently with The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines and because she has now been picked up by a major publisher, they took The Vincent Brothers away and now I have to wait to read it *pout* )

The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen
This is a New Adult contemporary I keep hearing about and to be honest, the plot sounds eerily similar to The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines but I enjoyed that so I thought I would probably enjoy this.

Moonlight by Tim O'Rourke (Free)
This is a fairly short New Adult novel at 158 pages but it sounds intriguing and it's a free download :)

Bouquet Toss by Melissa Brown (Free)
This is billed as a book for hopeless romantics so of course it's perfect for me!  Despite managing to catch the bouquet at every wedding, Daphne is the perpetual single girl and I have to find out why!  And bonus, this was a free download.

Devilish by Maureen Johnson (Free)
I heard about this on Twitter and basically since it was free AND written by Maureen Johnson, how can you possibly go wrong?  Devilish is high school satire for when the mood strikes me.

Well, I'm just finishing up reading Come Away With Me and then I think I'm going to start reading Mystic City as I keep hearing great things about it.  I hope you had a great week for books and as always, please leave your links.

Deity Review

"History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time. "

Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

I expect you might have heard before what a huge Jennifer L. Armentrout fan I am and how I'll read ANYTHING she writes and I love all her books, right?  And how much I love the Covenant series?  Well, it will come as no surprise that I couldn’t wait to read Deity and probably no surprise to know that it was just as fabulous as the rest of the series.  If you haven’t started these books yet, you sure do need to and I would advise that you stop reading this review and go find them (starting with the first one of course) as you will encounter spoilers.  If you’re interested or you just want a reminder, my review of Daimon is here, Half Blood is here and Pure is here.

In a nutshell, Deity is basically all wrapped up in Godly politics. You may remember at the end of Pure that Alex killed a Pure Blood out of self defence when he turned on her and Aiden covered it up by compelling the witnesses.  However, Telly is suspicious about the whole turn of events and basically, following the Daimon attack and subsequently the release of the furies, the world of Half’s and Pure’s is in upheaval.  THE PLOT THICKENS MY FRIENDS and this is where my review becomes difficult because I don’t want to give away too much.  Let’s just say that as a potential God Killer and the only Apollyon who hasn’t awoken yet, Alex is in more danger than ever and Aiden becomes even more protective *swoon*.  Alex is counting down the days until her birthday (and her awakening) and is terrified of losing herself but she shows a maturity throughout the book that we’ve only ever seen glimpses of before.  Baby girl is growing up y’all.  Seth kinda broke my heart in this book as appears to have gone on a bit of a power trip and his motives are questionable at best (so, no change there then) but we get more of an insight into his behaviour that helps us understand things a little better.  Alex knows she has to stay away from Seth but it’s not going to be that easy as fate has plans for them both and the Gods are sitting up and taking notice *gulp*.

Deity was an awesome read with some devastating twists and turns and an especially WTF? moment which blew me away.  Sometimes I found the plot a little complicated to keep up with but I managed and the politics are important to the whole story.  Ever wanted to know the real reason why relationships between Pure’s and Half Blood’s are forbidden? Read Deity and find out.  Deity manages to answer all the questions you came up with after reading Pure and just hands you a set of new ones.  Now, excuse me while I head off to read Elixir before pre-ordering Apollyon ;)

Deity was published on 6th November, 2012.  Elixir, a digital novella intended to be read after Deity is available now as a free download from here. Apollyon will be published on 9th April, 2013.  To find out more about Jennifer L. Armentrout and her books, please click here to visit her website.
